The Radio Disney River Cruise closed permanently on August 21, 1999, after guests who boarded expecting an animal-viewing attraction were disappointed to find a transportation circuit with little unique to see from the water.

The August 21, 1999 date is corroborated independently by Wikipedia and Walt Dated World; AllEars confirms only the year. Wikipedia attributes the closure to guests not realizing the ride's original purpose was transportation, and to the route offering little that could not already be seen from the surrounding walkways. Wikipedia records that the Safari Village dock became Character Landing for meet and greets, hosting Moana as of April 2023, while the Upcountry Landing dock in Asia became seating and stroller parking; other accounts map the two docks the other way round.

The boats returned in March 1999 as the Radio Disney River Cruise, adding music and recorded commentary from Radio Disney DJs Just Plain Mark and Zippy, presented as broadcasting from the top of the Tree of Life.

The DJ names are given by both Wikipedia and Walt Dated World; AllEars corroborates the rebrand and the added Radio Disney voices without naming the DJs. Wikipedia's List of Disney's Animal Kingdom attractions states the boats also stopped running in January 1999 before this March return, but no other source consulted mentions that shutdown, so it is not asserted here. That same list article transposes the name as 'Disney Radio River Cruise'; the two sources dedicated to the attraction both give 'Radio Disney River Cruise', which is the name used here.

The attraction was renamed in November 1998, the same month the Audio-Animatronic Iguanodon figure was removed from the route.

Both sources place the rename in November 1998 but render the new name differently: Wikipedia has 'Discovery River Taxi', Walt Dated World has 'Discovery River Water Taxis', and Wikipedia's List of Disney's Animal Kingdom attractions has 'Discovery River Taxis'. All three renderings are carried as aliases. That list article additionally states the boats closed in September 1998 and reopened that November; neither other source mentions an autumn shutdown, so that gap is single-sourced and is not asserted here.

Discovery River Boats opened with Disney's Animal Kingdom on the park's first day, running a roughly ten-minute round trip along the Discovery River between the Safari Village dock and Upcountry Landing in Asia.

Each boat carried 62 guests. Sources disagree on the size of the fleet: Wikipedia names five vessels (The Darting Dragonfly, Otter Nonsense, Leaping Lizard, Crocodile Belle and Hasty Hippo), while WaltDatedWorld names seven, adding Manatee Maiden and Scarlet Flamingo. The route passed the Tree of Life, geysers in Africa, a bathing Iguanodon near DinoLand U.S.A. and a fire-breathing dragon's cave outside Camp Minnie-Mickey.
