On October 21, 2020, Disney announced it would take over operations of the Morocco pavilion from its third-party operators by the end of 2020, ending the longstanding arrangement under which the Moroccan government sponsored the pavilion (the Moroccan Embassy and Tourism Board stayed on as cultural consultants).
Marketplace in the Medina closed in 2020 — when the Morocco pavilion's third-party operators surrendered amid COVID-19 and Disney's operational takeover — and has never reopened; Disney's official site still lists it as 'Temporarily Unavailable.'
Marketplace in the Medina opened as part of the original Morocco pavilion, which debuted at EPCOT's World Showcase on September 7, 1984 — an open-air market stall selling woven baskets, straw hats, sheepskin wallets and other Moroccan goods.
